April 5, 2013

It is with the deepest of sadness that we are reporting to you that our beloved Mayor Max (aka Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller) has passed away on the evening of April 2, 2013. He passed away peacefully in his sleep, first snoring, and then his heart stopped. He had cancer for just over three years, and we consider it a miracle that he lived so long with this illness and that we had him in our lives for 12 years and 2 months. In his death, I promise you that he did not suffer, and for this, we are very grateful.

We are absolutely heartbroken, and we miss him. We consider him our son, and we loved him as much as anyone can be loved. We would have reported to you sooner, but we have been so sad. We just wanted a few days to collect our thoughts. Now that this news has been posted by others on Facebook, which is completely fine, of course, I am writing to you this brief statement, and I will have more to say over the next few days as we continue our grieving.

I want to convey to you my most sincere feeling that is very important to me for you to know. I want to thank ALL of our Idyllwild and Facebook friends for how much you have meant to us AND to Mayor Max. I fully believe that your love and kind thoughts extended the life of the Mayor. I will never be able to thank you enough for adding so immensely to his life and to ours. Please know that if you are reading this, you are part of the people that helped to sustain the happiness and life of our dear Max. Thank you so much. We love and appreciate you so much, and we want to continue our communication and friendship with you.

Going forward, Mini Me has agreed to step in as the Interim Mayor of Idyllwild while my husband, Glenn Warren, and I, Phyllis Mueller, after a period of grieving, will go on the quest for our new Mini Max. Mini Max will be a Golden Retriever that will be named Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller, II, and will then officially take over as the Mayor of Idyllwild, completing Mayor Max’s mayoral term through June 30, 2014. Idyllwild Animal Rescue Friends (ARF), the mayoral election sponsor, has also OK’d this mayoral transition plan.

Mini Me is asking for your help, especially everyone that received a Mini Me, to help Mini Me in his interim charter as the Mayor of Idyllwild, to continue to implement Mayor Max’s most important mayoral charter closest to his heart, which was and always will be: (1) To convey unconditional love, and (2) To do as many good deeds for others as possible. Everyone helping with this charter will be designated as Interim Mini Mayors along with Mini Me. We thank you for your help, one and all.

Our hearts are entirely broken at this time, but I want you to know how happy he was living in Idyllwild and being the Mayor of Idyllwild. The joy and exhilaration he felt in meeting people made him so happy. I will never be able to thank you enough for all of your love and making him so happy.

We will be having a memorial service for Mayor Max and the details of when and where will be published once we make those decisions. ARF is also setting up a shrine area on their property where remembrances can be placed and visited.

He loved you all so much, and over the next days, I will continue to post my thoughts and feelings, and we will continue to answer all communications. We love you too and will look forward to seeing you again soon.

Love always,

Phyllis Mueller

As Mayor Max, I's passing was so devastating to his Chiefs of Staff and to so many in town, the inclination was to put it behind and move on. However, many in town came forward to explain that the people needed closure. As such, a memorial service was held and was attended by over 300 people.
